This project is Entitled Rain in Soho, after the song by The Mountain Goats.
For this project, I wanted to draw someone in motion. I looked into different photography projects based on dance and was struck by Alexander Yakovlev’s photography and his ballet series.
I have synesthesia; for me, it’s specifically triggered by sound. Songs have a dramatic effect on me when creating art. During this project, I found myself returning to Rain in Soho by The Mountain Goats. This song is strong and dark compared to the visual of a ballerina. Her pose is dynamic and powerful rather than poised and soft, like how one would picture a ballerina. I felt as though her movement connected much more to a song like Rain in Soho than something more classical. Because of this, I added splashes of water by her feet, I wanted it to feel as though her dancing was assertive and her movements mighty and larger than ballet. I also added fire to the top of the picture to contrast the water and further point out the power in her movement.
