Pippin is a 1972 musical by Stephen Schwartz; I worked on a production of Pippin in my first year of high school.
Pippin was one of the first shows I worked lighting on. I learned from an amazing lighting designer named Brendan, who was in his final year. Brendan was never timid in his approach to lighting, always going above and beyond what was expected. He created amazing light shows that have fueled my inspiration for lighting design for many years to come.
Because this show meant so much to me, I created a poster for it. The musical is about a young man named Pippin, and a circus ensemble tells his story. The circus is cult-like and tries to sacrifice Pippin in the finale. The poster is a very simple concept, with the circus stripes withering away on one side and darkening on the other, the crown on top of the word Pippin representing his search for glory and power.
